Made his first appearance for Rovers, at outside right, in January 1946. He had previously played works league football for Birmingham Gas. He was soon moved to play right back.
He missed just the one game in Rovers "Jubilee season", making 50 years of competing in the Birmingham Combination, when Rovers won the league, the Worcestershire Senior Cup and reached the final of the Birmingham Senior Cup. He formed a formidable back line partnership with Norman Jenks.
In 1947/48 Jack was again one of the first names on the teamsheet, although when Joe Wainwright was injured mid season he often took his place at centre half rather than playing right back. In what was another fine Rovers season Jack played against Aldershot in the First Round of the F.A. Cup and in the final of the Birmingham Senior Cup where Rovers lost to Atherstone Town and the Worcestershire Senior Cup where Rovers defeated Hereford United 3-0.
In the 1948/49 season he was no longer guaranteed a place in the starting line-up and was often player-coach for the reserve side.
