Made his first appearance for Rovers, at outside right, in January 1946. He had previously played works league football for Birmingham Gas. He was soon moved to play right back.
He missed just the one game in Rovers "Jubilee season", making 50 years of competing in the Birmingham Combination, when Rovers won the league, the Worcestershire Senior Cup and reached the final of the Birmingham Senior Cup. He formed a formidable back line partnership with Norman Jenks
