First appeared for Rovers at left half in October 1946.
He became a key member of a very strong half-back line along with Joe Wainwright and Michael O`Mahoney as Rovers had a very successful "Jubilee" season, celebrating 50 years of Birmingham Combination membership.
He fractured his jaw in the match against Worcester City when Rovers clinched the Birmingham Combination title, meaning he missed the Worcestershire Cup final triumph the following week and also the final of the Birmingham Senior Cup.
The fracture was not without complications, requiring an operation towards the end of June due to severe absences on the jaw bone.
He recovered in time for the start of the 1947/48 season where he was again a key figure in the half-back line. In what was another decent season for Rovers, Cliff played in the Birmingham Senior Cup Final defeat to Atherstone Town and the victory over Hereford United in the Worcestershire Senior Cup final.
he had an accident at his workplace in December 1948, where he was a welder and molten steel burned his right ankle. This put him out of action for a number of weeks.
