A 6 foot 1 inch centre forward who first appeared for Rovers, as a 20 year old, in December 1938. He had been playing centre half for Matlock Rovers in the Sparkbrook League.
He was brought up in Sparkhill and attended Formans Road school. As a schoolboy he had been picked for South Birmingham Boys and as a 17 year old had played for Cardiff City, although not in the first team.
After impressing for Rovers, he signed amateur forms for Blackburn Rovers in January 1939 and played in a handful of trial games, but did not make the first team. He then returned to Rovers.
He was leading scorer in what was a dire season for Rovers when then had to apply for re-election.
He joined Birmingham, who were in the Second Division, in July 1939.

Debut: vs Hinckley United, Birmingham Combination, Victoria Ground, 10 December 1938, 5-4. He scored twice.
He served in the army in India during the second world war. In 1944 he was chosen to represent the army in a match against the R.A.F. He was also chosen to play for "The Europeans" in a match against the pick of the Indian Teams.
It was reported that in September he won three cups in four days. He played for England on the wing, partnered by Arsenal and England cricket legend Dennis Compton in a match against Scotland, where he scored one of Englands five goals. He also scored in the 5-1 victory the army had over the R.A.F. He then scored the winning goal in a match where England beat "The Rest".
