...Hobday profile

Robert "Bert" Hobday was goalkeeper who made his debut against Bournville Athletic, in the Birmingham Combination, on 25 March 1911. He had previously been playing for the reserves and before that Stoke United in the Redditch League.

Work took him to the Black Country and he joined Brierley Hill Alliance in December 1911. He also played for Wednesbury Old Athletic.

During the First World War he played for Wednesbury Old Park Works Team.

After the war he played for Worcester City before he re-joined the Rovers at the start of the 1921/22 season. He was ever present in that campaign, where he also played in the Worcestershire Senior Cup final against Stourbridge, where Rovers lost 1-0.

He was captain in the 1922/23 campaign.

He was appointed club secretary in June 1930, a post he held until he had to relinquish it in February 1932 due to a serious illness. In June 1932 he relocated to Colwyn Bay for a period of convalescence.

Sadly he never really recovered from this illness and he died on 8 December 1933, aged just 47.
