Harris began his football career at non-league side Cradley Heath while working as a mechanic.
In 1928, he signed for Cardiff City, scoring on his home debut in a 2–1 win over Leicester City. It took him several years to fully establish himself in the side as numerous minor injuries forced him in and out of the first team before missing just two games during the 1931–32 season.
In 1933, he was sold to Charlton Athletic, who were in a slump at the time. Harris was part of the team that helped the club win two consecutive promotions to return to the top flight.
After leaving Charlton he returned to non league football with Brierley Hill Alliance and Cradley Heath before leaving Cradley and joining Rovers in September 1938.
He was captain in the 1939/40 season. During that season the Bromsgrove Messenger "doubted whether he had a superior at centre half in the Combination. His headwork, anticipation and scrupulously fair play were a joy to watch". He was ever present that season where he helped Rovers to a 4th place finish in the Combination and lifted the Tillotson Cup after a thrilling 4-3 victory over Stourbridge in the final.
