He played for Oxford City 1934/5 and 1935/6, although he still turned out for Moor Green for midweek games. He also played for Oxford City 22/2/36 in a AFA Senior Cup match which Moor Green lost 1-3 (away)

He was part of the triple winning Moor Green team that won the Central Amateur League (35/6 to 37/8)

April 1938, he is most likely to have travelled to Holland when Moor Green played Ajax amongst other teams.
1938/9 Programme notes at the end of March record that he had scored 37 goals at that stage of the season.

He was also a amateur England International

1939/40 He scored in 10 friendlies including matches against Bromsgrove in April. Moor Green lost 3-4, with Herbert scoring twice. He was promptly called up to play for Rovers, making his debut the following week and again scoring twice.

The following week he was back at Moor Green scoring 3 in a 5-2 friendly win against Rovers. He then spent the rest of the season playing for both sides.

His final game for the Rovers was in the Tillotson Cup final victory over Stourbridge. Herbert scored the second goal in a match where Rovers sealed a 4-3 victory courtesy of a last minute goal from Ernie Waldron.


After the war he returned to Moor Green. He scored 5 goals in Moor Greens 1945/46 8-0 win in the FAC against Hereford United at Edgar Street.

He was awarded the Walter Best Bach award for loyal service to Moor Green in 1948.
