Made his debut for Rovers at inside right in March 1939. He had been playing works football with Serck Radiators after beginning his career with Knowle.

He had a fine goal scoring record at Rovers. The Bromsgrove Messenger felt he had inexhaustible energy and "he was the Alec James of the Birmingham Combination". He was also the regular penalty taker for Rovers in his time with the club.

He was part of the side which captured the Tillotson Cup, defeating Stourbridge 4-3, courtesy of a last miniute goal from Ernie Waldron.
