Ernie was educated at Stirchley School.

He was nicknamed "Sacco". He joined Rovers at the start of the 1933/34 season. He had previously played in the Kings Norton League.

After a fine first season for Rovers when he formed a fine right wing partnership with Alf Simmonds he was selected to represent the Combination in the annual champions vs the rest match held at Dudley Sports Centre, one of the finest grounds in the Midlands at the time with an estimated capacity of 40,000.

After a fine start to the 1934/35 season, he signed for or Crystal Palace in November 1934, making 86 appearances and scoring 32 goals before his transfer to Aberdeen in November 1946. There he played 8 times, scoring 3 times, leaving in 1948.

At the start of the second world war, he returned to the Rovers ranks. Due to uncertainties around the war clubs were not required to register players, and guest players often featured. Ernie was one of these.

He died in 1994.
