...Byng profile

A 5 foot 11 inch goalkeeper, who had previously played for Bromsgrove St. Johns and Sidemoor United, before making his debut for Rovers against Leamington Town, on the final day of the 1923-24 Birmingham Combination season on 3 May 1924.

Later that same day he played for Sidemoor United in the final of the Holy Cross Cup against Clent United, where despite him giving a "splendid display" Clent prevailed 2-1.

He returned to the side in January 1926 when regular keeper A. Smith was unable to play and an impressive performance was enough for him to become first choice keeper for the rest of that season, and the following one.

He remained first choice for the 1926/27 season when he was often praised for his fine performances.

In March 1927 he was chosen to represent the Birmingham Combination in an inter-league match against the London League at Craven Cottage. The Combination lost 5-2, but Byng was praised for his solid performance.

Towards the end of the season he was also playing for Wellington Town in the higher ranked Birmingham League. He remained with Wellington in the 1927/28 season.

He re-joined Rovers in December 1927 as cover for regular keeper Frank Guest who was injured.
