Bobby made more than 400 appearances as a midfielder in the Football League. He spent most of his club career at West Bromwich Albion, where he played more than 300 league games and helped the club win the League Cup and F.A. Cup, before moving to Birmingham City and then having a spell playing in the USA. He won seven caps for Scotland.
He joined the Rovers when Roy Martin was manager and made his debut for the Rovers in the Southern League Midlands Division against Bridgend Town in September 1979.

After his playing career was over he was appointed Rovers manager, replacing Harry Sheppard, on 23 March 1982. He was initially assisted by Dave Harper, before taking sole charge at the end of the 1982/83 season. He then lead Rovers through a period of unprecedented success culminating with the Rovers finishing runners-up to Wycombe Wanderers in the Vauxhall Conference in the 1992/93 season and a run to the F.A. Cup third round in the 1993/94 season, where they put up a valiant performance in front of a full house at the Victoria ground against second tier side Barnsley, losing 2-1 following 2 late goals from the visitors. He was without doubt the most successful manager in the history of Bromsgrove Rovers.

He died on 10 June 2022, aged 78.
