After featuring regularly as a right half in the 1926/27 season he was struck down by a serious illness, missing the early part of the 1927/28 season, returning to full health in November 1927. Whilst recovering full fitness he played for Pigotts in the Smethwick League.

In his first game back for the Rovers, against Market Harborough, a benefit collection for Dick was taken raising £4 3s 3d. Sadly, his misfortune continued as he was injured and had to leave the field in the first half with a "ruptured muscle" After he recovered he was in and out of the side for the rest of the season.
