Joseph "Joe" Merrick was a goalkeeper who was born in Great Barr in 1900. He was brought to Bromsgrove by player coach Frank Moss in September 1929.
He had previously played for Queens Park Rangers, Birmingham and Manchester United, but never in the first XI at any of these teams. He did however play 28 times in the Football League for Walsall in 1921. He had also played for Nuneaton Town.
In the 1929/30 season, he battled for the number one spot with E.G. Smith and C. Taylor.
