Douglas Summers was first and foremost a cricketer who played for Astwood Bank, and appeared in one first class match for Worcestershire, against Warwickshire in 1930.
In the winter months he played midweek football for Redditch Wednesday before joining Rovers in November 1931. He had also previously played for Redditch Town and Alcester Old Boys.
After a brief stay at Rovers he moved to Cheltenham Town where he spent 3 seasons. Luton Town were interested in signing him in July 1936, but he played for Leamington Town in the 1936/37 season.
In 1938/39 he played for Evesham Town, when they withdrew from the Birmingham Combination in November he re-joined Rovers
