Stewart was educated at North Bromsgrove High School, where he signed schoolboy forms for the Rovers.
Aged 17, he spent a season at Crewe Alexandra, where he played for the reserve side.
He returned to the Rovers in the summer of 1984 and played in the reserve side for a season or so under Ivor Chambers.
He made his debut for the first team against Stourbridge on 1 May 1986. He soon became a fixture in the side usually at full back and was a key member of the side through the Rovers glory years.
He helped the Rovers win promotion to the conference in 1991-92 and finish runners-up in their first season in the non-league elite. He played in the F.A. Cup first round 5 times (Welling Utd, Basingstoke, Bournemouth, Northampton and Cinderford) and also against Yeovil in the second round and Barnsley in the third round in their famous cup run in 1993-94.
3 Worcestershire Senior Cup wins, back to back Conference League Cup triumphs and appearances for the England semi-professional side guarantees Stewart a place among the Rovers legends.
Sadly, he was a victim of Rovers financial woes and was released by Brian Kenning at the start of the 1997-98 campaign and after a brief spell at Kidderminster Harriers he announced his retirement in October 1997. This was short lived though and spells at Redditch United and Moor Green followed before he was coaxed back to the Rovers in the 2002-03 season as captain. However, this spell was short lived and he played his final game for the Rovers against Gloucester City on 25 January 2003.
