How They Saw It
Halesowen's fine display

Halesowen gave their best footballing display of the season when thay visited Bromsgrove on Saturday and won 2-1. Although the margin was a narrow one, Halesowen were well on top throughout and only a brilliant display by Hooper in the home goal prevented a heavier defeat. Parsons returned to lead the visitors' attack after a long lay-off through injury.

Bromsgrove : Hooper; Innocent, Pugh; Thomas, Wainwright, Bolton; Cotterill, Trenchard, Finney, Perkins, Barber.

Halesowen : Morris; Field, Hoof; Purvis, Culwick, Adams; M. Jones, Wood, Parsons, Russell, Anderson.

Referee : Mr. P. G. Clarke (Pershore)

Bromsgrove started kicking down the slope but the visitors made the early running and in the first few minutes a promising move ended with Parsons firing over the top, and Wood sent in a great shot which hit the bar. Despite this early pressure, however, it was the home side that went ahead in the 18th minute. A bad clearance by Field put Barber clear and his sharp, low centre was stabbed home by Perkins. The visitors then began to produce some brilliant attacking play and after going near on several occasions equalised in the 38th minute. It was an intricate move that led to it. Jones dummied up the right wing, cleverly beat Pugh and then pulled the ball back from the by-line to Anderson, who had moved over from the left, and his centre was smartly headed home by Russell standing by the far post.

Half-time : Bromsgrove 1, Halesowen 1.

It was nearly all Halesowen in the second half. Parsons and Roberts missed open goals, although some credit must be given to Hooper for his good positioning. He brought off a brilliant save from Wood and another from an Anderson free kick that had goal written all over it. The home side's attacks were few and far between, but their defence was holding out magnificently and the visitors forwards could not break through. It was left to Culwick to get the winner. Right winger Jones was fouled just outside the box on the right and from Wood's kick the centre-half headed a great goal. Halesowen played well on the day, with Mel Adams, left half, prompting in masterly fashion throughout the game and Wood scheming well. For the home team Hooper in goal was brilliant, with centre-half Wainwright a tower of strength.

Result : Bromsgrove 1, Halesowen 2
